The Pet Owl on the Beach

February 12, 2017 by Deb Schwedhelm

We were on a walk in Hayama with friends before dinner and there it was, standing in the sand, a pet owl on a walk with his dachshund brother. Oh the questions we had for this family, which of course, we could not because they didn't really speak any English. We tried! We do know that Mrs Pet Owl is five months old and she eats pieces dead bird (they showed us iPhone images). How they house such a creature is beyond me. Shoot, how they acquired such a creature is beyond me. Pretty sure this will be a first and last experience to go down in the books -- seeing a pet owl on a family walk on the beach.

Holding the Monkey

February 09, 2017 by Deb Schwedhelm

We saw a few pet monkeys while in El Nido. Not only are these monkeys adorable, they make the sweetest noise ever, sounding a bit like the 'mew' of a kitten. This monkey received a hard candy from his owner, which made him super happy. The kids loved petting and holding him. I wanted to talk him home, but the owner said no. Apparently this monkey's mother died and the owner rescued him. He's now five months old.
